Riding on Snæfellsnes

Snæhestar and Lýsuhóll offer you a different riding tour in Iceland: the most beautiful spots of the peninsula in a personal atmosphere, with nights in homely summerhouses at the farm and the hot tub and warm mineral pool after a day in the saddle.

Riders on a wide beach on Snæfellsnes

We ride with the tide

We mostly ride along the wide beaches of Löngufjörur, Iceland’s most beautiful riding area, so we plan the rides by the times of low tide. That leaves the occasional free morning or afternoon for sightseeing: rocks with nesting birds, gorges, caves, beautiful beaches or a trip with a fishing boat.

High tide: Löngufjörur is under water. On the long tours we plan the rides around low tide.

Breeding and training

For those interested, we give you insight into the breeding and training of our horses. You might also see them roaming freely in the mountains and study their natural behaviour.

We spend up to 6 hours a day on horseback, tölting or trotting most of the way, so participants need a good basic riding experience.

“Amazing! The staff was friendly! The horseback guides were awesome! So beautiful! Thank you!”Dana Harrop

Good to know

  • What to bring

Summer in Iceland means very changeable weather, from 5°C to 25°C. Bring warm wind- and waterproof clothing as well as lighter clothes, warm underwear, gloves, a scarf and your riding trousers — and a bathing suit and sunglasses. As we cross rivers and ride along the sea, rubber (riding) boots are recommended.

  • Riding gear

We provide rain gear and helmets free of charge. Used riding gear and boots must be disinfected before arrival, and used leather equipment (boots, bridles, saddles) may not be brought into the country. Our horses are not immune to many imported diseases — please help us protect them.

  • Riding ability

We spend up to 6 hours a day on horseback, over all kinds of landscape, across rivers and rocks — tölting or trotting most of the way. Participants should have solid riding experience and be in good health. Our horses are reliable, friendly, enduring and willing to please.

  • Getting here

Flights to Iceland can be booked at any travel agency. We pick you up in Reykjavík, and if you plan a longer stay we can arrange further accommodation. We strongly recommend medical and travel insurance.
